Accra, Jan. 16, GNA – The Central Regional Health Directorate of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) has condemned a violent assault at the Akoti Health Centre in the Assin Fosu District of the Central Region.

The incident reportedly occurred on Sunday, January 11, 2026, while health workers were providing emergency medical care to clients at the facility.

It described as a grave the threat to the safety of health workers, patients, and visitors.

A statement issued in Accra by the GHS, copied to the Ghana News Agency on Friday, said two injured persons were rushed from Assin Wurakese to the health centre for treatment after sustaining injuries from an alleged assault.

During the course of treatment, the suspected assailant also presented himself at the facility seeking medical attention.

The situation, however, escalated when a group of individuals allegedly stormed the health centre wielding offensive weapons and violently assaulted the suspect on the premises.

“The attack occurred in the presence of health workers, patients, and visitors, creating panic and posing a serious risk to lives, property, and the sanctity of the health facility,” the statement said.

It said the Ghana Police Service had been duly notified and urged to promptly investigate the incident and apprehend all persons involved.

The Directorate also called on the Police to enhance visibility and provide adequate security at the Akoti Health Centre to restore confidence among health workers.

It would also ensure the uninterrupted delivery of essential health services without fear or intimidation.

“The Central Regional Health Directorate strongly condemns all acts of violence within health facilities in the region,” it said, noting that health institutions were neutral and protected spaces dedicated solely to the preservation of life.

It said any attack on clients or health workers was unacceptable and undermined the safety, confidence, and effective functioning of the healthcare system.

The Directorate assured the public of its unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of health workers, patients, and visitors across all health facilities in the region and beyond.

Management, it said, would continue to collaborate with security agencies and other stakeholders to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.

It urged the public to remain calm and support collective efforts to maintain peace, order, and safety within all health facilities.
