Accra, Dec. 13, GNA – The Wesley Girls’ High School Old Girls’ Association (WGHS OGA) has rejected recent allegations of religious discrimination at the school.
The Association described the claims as unfounded and inconsistent with the institution’s long-standing record of inclusivity.
This was contained in a press release signed by Ms. Harriet Wereko‑Brobby, President of the Association, and copied to the Ghana News Agency.
The statement said Wesley Girls’ High School operated within a disciplined structure guided by Methodist values while remaining open to students of all faiths.
It said that the school applied the principle of “in loco parentis” and therefore needed objective guidelines to ensure safety, discipline and academic excellence for all students.
According to the statement, not every individual preference could be accommodated if it risked distorting the school’s curriculum or monitoring systems.
“Recognising that Wesley Girls’ High School Cape Coast is home to students from diverse faith backgrounds, the OGA also realises that any allowance made for one particular faith, has to be made for all other faiths in the interests of impartiality.
“It is neither practical nor sustainable to expect individualised religious accommodations, that could eventually compromise the school’s order, safety, and long-standing traditions which underpin its enviable status,” it said.
The Association said it supported the position of the Methodist Church Ghana, on whose spiritual and moral foundation the school had been established for more than a century.
“We stand firmly with the Headmistress, the School Board, and the Methodist Church Ghana in safeguarding the time-tested cherished values and standards that have shaped generations of godly, confident, capable, and principled women,” it stated.
The statement called for calm and urged the public to address the matter with restraint and respect.
