Kumasi, Sept. 17, GNA — The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), has inaugurated a 12-member Local Technical Committee (LTC) on Migration for the Kumasi Metropolis.
The Committee is made up of representatives from the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, Ghana Immigration Service, Ghana Education Service, Ghana Police Service, Ghana Health Service, NADMO, and the Ghana Enterprises Agency, among other relevant institutions.
The Committee’s mandate is to enhance coordination, foster inter-institutional collaboration, and improve information sharing among key actors within the metropolitan governance framework.
The LTC was inaugurated at its maiden meeting, bringing together officials from diverse institutions to lay the groundwork for a more coordinated and comprehensive approach to addressing migration-related concerns in the Metropolis.
Mr. Francis Dwira Darko, KMA Metro Coordinating Director, speaking at the ceremony, noted that, migration was an enduring feature of human life, and that Ghana, like many other countries, continued to grapple with various migration-related challenges.
He observed that, in Kumasi, residents frequently encounter large numbers of beggars on principal streets and in some well-known communities, adding that, the community was also aware of the issues associated with these activities.
Mr. Dwira Darko commended the partnership between KMA and IOM, particularly efforts aimed at strengthening institutional support and promoting public awareness to address migration-related challenges.
He also acknowledged the Assembly’s commitment to the initiative, including the provision of office space to support the Committee’s work.
He urged all stakeholders to fully commit themselves to the task, and to support metropolitan authorities in tackling migration-related challenges through a holistic, well-coordinated, and sustainable approach.
The establishment of the LTC therefore represents a significant stride toward deepening institutional collaboration and advancing effective migration governance in the Kumasi Metropolis.
