Tanyigbe Traditional Council affirms position on chieftaincy legitimacy

Accra, Dec 23, GNA – The Tanyigbe Traditional Council has reaffirmed that Togbega Kodi Adiko VI, known in private life as Mr Roland Kofi Adiko, remains the recognised Paramount Chief of the Tanyigbe Traditional Area.

In a rejoinder to a Ghana News Agency (GNA) publication on December 18, the Secretary of the Traditional Council, Mr Isaac Tawiah Gbortsu, stated that an appeal had been lodged with the National House of Chiefs against Togbe Etoe Kodzo II’s claim to the Paramount Stool, explaining under Section 34 of the Chieftaincy Act, 2008 (Act 759), the filing of an appeal operated as an automatic stay of execution.

He noted that any representation suggesting that the authority of Togbega Kodi Adiko VI had been nullified or set aside was “factually and legally incorrect”.

The rejoinder follows the GNA publication headlined: “Tanyigbe Traditional Council Marks First Milestone, Urges Unity for Development”, on December 18, 2025.

In the interview story, Togbe Etoe Kodzo II expressed appreciation to stakeholders for facilitating the elevation of Tanyigbe to Traditional Council status, among other issues.

However, the Traditional Council asserted that Togbe Etoe Kodzo II was not present and did not participate in proceedings at the formal opening of the Tanyigbe Traditional Council on 17th December 2024.

“On that occasion, the Paramount Chief who was present as host of the event was His Royal Highness, Togbega Kodi Adiko VI,” the rejoinder stated.

The Tanyigbe Traditional Council was inaugurated in December 2024, bringing the number of Traditional Councils in the Volta Region to 75.

Mr Gbortsu stated that until the appeal was finally determined, Togbega Kodi Adiko VI continued to function as Paramount Chief of the Traditional Area, exercising customary authority in collaboration with the Tanyigbe Traditional Council.

“The duly recognised Paramount Chief of the Tanyigbe Traditional Area is His Royal Highness, Togbega Kodi Adiko VI, occupant of the Kodi Stool, which is regarded by custom and history as the paramount stool of Tanyigbe,” it said.

It emphasised that pending the final determination of the matter by the National House of Chiefs, Togbega Kodi Adiko VI remained in office as Paramount Chief of the area.

The Council further appealed to the public to refrain from actions or statements that could undermine the appeal process or ongoing legal proceedings.

“The Traditional Council remains fully committed to peace, unity and respect for the judicial process. We urge all parties and the general public to refrain from actions or statements that may cause confusion or undermine ongoing legal proceedings,” the rejoinder added.

In March 2025, the Judicial Committee of the Volta Regional House of Chiefs considered the chieftaincy dispute and upheld Togbe Etoe Kodzo II as Paramount Chief of the Tanyigbe Traditional Area, in line with its interpretation of the customary arrangements applicable to the case.

The Committee also expressed the view that the parallel enstoolment of Mr Roland Kofi Adiko, known traditionally as Togbega Kodi Adiko VI, could not stand under the circumstances it examined.

The dispute dates back to 2017, following the funeral of Togbe Kwasi Adiko V, after which two individuals were separately installed as Paramount Chiefs of the Traditional Area.

The matter was subsequently referred to the Judicial Committee of the Volta Regional House of Chiefs for consideration.

Historical records indicate that the Akoto family of the Anyidoto clan, occupying the Doku Dzehe stool, and the Adiko family of the Kodivi clan, occupying the Kodi Ayefior stool, had operated a rotational arrangement for the Fiaga (Paramount Chief) position prior to the dispute.
