MCE clears air on alleged spraying of chemicals by helicopter in Jomoro

Half-Assini (W/R), Dec. 17, GNA – Mr Benedict Boadi, the Jomoro Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), has dismissed allegations that a helicopter recently sprayed chemicals which sparked bush fires in certain part of the municipality.

He explained that the operation formed part of a land survey by a government delegation led by Mr Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, and Madam Dzifa Abla Gomashie, Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts.

He said the survey was aimed at testing the soil for a large-scale oil palm plantation following a contract between the Government of Ghana and Malaysia.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, Mr Boadi said the government needed a large tract of land for the oil palm plantation following Malaysia’s example of using the cash crop to turn its economy round.

He said the helicopter, was to survey the entire land of Nzema and identify which site would be suitable or ideal for the oil palm plantation.

The MCE explained that: “As a large-scale plantation project, the survey involved pitching of pegs and marking red cross signs beneath them by people on the ground, to enable the helicopter to go round and pick the coordinates to read the ideal and suitable land for the cultivation.”

He said it was not true that the helicopter was spraying anything in Jomoro and cautioned the people against the spreading those weird speculations and allegations.
