Kpandai ECG Hospital mortuary commissioned after staff-funded initiative

By Kingsley Mamore, GNA

Dambai (O/R), Dec 28, GNA – Dr Sonlaar Joseph, the medical superintendent of Kpandai, Evangelical Church of Ghana (ECG) Hospital shared the inspiring story behind the newly commissioned mortuary complex.

The project costing GHS3 million, was largely funded through Internally Generated Funds (IGF) and an innovative initiative involving 24-staff members, dubbed the “24 disciples.”

Addressing stakeholders and community members during the commissioning, the medical superintendent explained that the 24-disciples took personal bank loans over a five-year period to support the project after external funding proposals and loan requests were declined.

Dr Sonlaar said the 24-disciples’ efforts gave the hospital leadership hope and enabled completion of the mortuary, which can accommodate 350 to 400 bodies.

According to the medical superintendent, the mortuary complex includes temporary holding ward for bodies, a concern of Muslim communities.

He said the mortuary also had a main cold storage facility divided into VIP and ordinary sections. Additional amenities comprised of two offices, bathroom and water closet facilities, an area for bathing and dressing bodies, and a septic drainage system to mitigate public health risks.

He again said the mortuary hafd been positioned as an intervention to provide temporary relief for families during difficult times, ensuring dignified management of deceased loved ones.

He assured Kpandai communities and Ghanaians that the facility will be staffed by competent and dedicated personnel to deliver quality service.

The superintendent expressed gratitude to the staff, noting their sacrifice turned the project into reality.

In a heartfelt appeal to the public and local authorities, the hospital superintendent has called for support to acquire a new transformer that will ensure a stable electricity supply for the facility.

He noted that the hospital in recent years had suffered from frequent power fluctuations, which have affected its operations and was hoping that the new transformer will eliminate low current issues and provide consistent power, enabling the hospital to run its medical services without interruption.

Nana Okyeame Donkor, on behalf of the paramount chief of Kpandai has commended the Evangelical Church of Ghana (ECG) management team for constructing a mortuary facility, addressing a long-standing challenge for residents.

The paramount chief mentioned that previously families had to travel to distant towns such as Bimbila, Yendi, Tamale, Kete-krachi, Worawora, Nkwanta South and many other places to preserve deceased loved ones.

Some other sub-chiefs also lauded ECG’s Hospital authorities’ decisive action, recognizing the facility’s impact on the community. In addition, they pledged support for the facility’s future development, ensuring its continued benefits to the area.
