Government urged to prioritise technical education to tackle youth unemployment

By Nana Kwame Essel

Twifo Darmang (C/R), Dec. 23, GNA – The Kontihemaa of the Twifo Traditional Area in the Twifo-Atti-Morkwa District of the Central Region, Nana Abena Amoanimaa III, has appealed to government to invest more in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions to reduce unemployment in the country.

According to Nana Amoanimaa who is also the Queen Mother of Twifo Enyinase , the construction of more technical schools would contribute significantly to national development by equipping the youth with practical skills, enabling them to rely on their talents rather than depending solely on office-based employment.

Nana Amoanimaa made the appeal during the 10th Anniversary, and Second Speech and Prize-Giving Day of By His Grace Preparatory School, held under the theme: “Training 21st Century Youth to be Pragmatic and Technocrats for National Development.”

She emphasised that many students performed better in practical work than in theoretical studies and should therefore be encouraged to pursue technical and vocational education to horn their talents.

District Director of Education for Twifo-Atti- Morkwa, Mrs Augustina  Attakorah urged parents to support government initiatives in STEM and TVET education.

She noted that many students were highly talented in practical skills which must be developed to the fullest and stop focusing only on office work.

The Chief Executive Officer of By His Grace Preparatory School, Mr Kweku Badu Amponfi, also highlighted some of the challenges confronting private schools in Ghana, particularly issues relating to senior high school placement.

He called for greater support to ensure fairness in the education system.
