Jama (Savannah Region), Sept. 10, GNA – Nnaa Professor Lanjagor Karley II, Paramount Chief of the Jama Traditional Area in the Bole District of the Savannah Region, has commended the Bui Power Authority (BPA) for its contribution to educational development within communities around the Bui Generating Station (BGS) enclave.
He said the BPA’s educational scholarship scheme had enabled many brilliant but needy students in the area to pursue higher education.
Nnaa Prof Karley II made the commendation at a durbar of chiefs and people of the Jama Traditional Area held to climax this year’s annual Yam Festival celebration at Jama on the theme: “Our Heritage, Our Unity, Our Development.”
He said the scholarship scheme had benefited students from the four traditional areas surrounding the BGS enclave, namely Jama, Banda, Bole and North Mo.
“The scholarships have enabled the students to pay their tuition, admission, bursary and accommodation fees,” he stated.
Nnaa Prof Karley II also commended the BPA for providing some beneficiaries with laptop computers to support their studies.
He appealed to the Authority to extend electricity to Jama Mooynoa and adjoining communities to stimulate economic activities and accelerate socio-economic development.
According to him, extending electricity supply to the deprived communities would create sustainable employment opportunities and improve the livelihoods of residents.
Nnaa Prof Karley II explained that the Yam Festival was celebrated annually to preserve the cultural heritage and historical identity of the Jama people, while promoting tourism and economic growth.
Mr Chrisentus B. Kuunifaa, Director of Health, Safety and Environment at the BPA, reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to strengthening its relationship with local communities and the Jama Traditional Council for mutual benefit.
As a gesture of support, he presented GH¢10,000 on behalf of the BPA towards the construction of a community centre initiated by the Traditional Council.
The festival featured the preparation and exhibition of traditional dishes, including pipuri and fufu, as well as drumming and dancing performances.
