Czech president swears in new government led by populist PM Babiš

Prague, Dec 15, (dpa/GNA) – The new Czech government led by right-wing populist prime minister and billionaire Andrej Babiš, was formally sworn in on Monday, completing the formation of the Cabinet.

President Petr Pavel administered the oath of office to ministers at Prague Castle, urging them to work constructively and wishing them “much strength” in turbulent times.

Babiš’ ANO party will control eight ministries, while the anti-immigration Freedom and Direct Democracy (SPD) party will take three portfolios. The Motorists party, which campaigns on motorists’ interests, will hold four ministries.

The 71-year-old Babiš must now secure a vote of confidence in parliament, which is scheduled for January 13. The governing alliance holds a clear majority in the lower house, with 108 of the 200 seats.

Babiš has signalled a sharp change in Ukraine policy. In a recent video message posted on social media, he said the European Commission must find alternative ways to finance Ukraine.

“We will not take guarantees for anything nor put any money in,” Babiš said.

He has long criticized President Pavel’s ammunition initiative launched in early 2024 which gathers munitions for Ukraine from around the world.

According to the most recent figures, Kiev has received 1.8 million rounds of large-calibre ammunition through the Czech-led effort this year.

Babiš has faced criticism over conflicts of interest stemming from his ownership of more than 250 companies alongside his political role. He has said he will place his food processing, agriculture and chemicals conglomerate Agrofert into a trust to comply with legal requirements.

At the EU level, ANO cooperates with Hungary’s Fidesz party and the Freedom Party of Austria within the Patriots For Europe parliamentary group.
