Ho, Dec 4, GNA – Innovative agricultural technologies dominated activities at this year’s AgricFair held in Ho as part of Ghana’s 41st Farmers Day celebrations events.

The AgricFair, held on December 3, 2025, brought together researchers and agribusiness institutions to showcase modern solutions for sustainable farming.

Key participants included the CSIR, KNUST School of Agriculture, the University of Ghana School of Agriculture, and the African Agribusiness Consortium (AAC).

Dr Rasmus Tse, an agricultural researcher at KNUST, told participants that his team was successfully breeding both indigenous and foreign chicken varieties.

“With our innovation, the birds grow faster than expected, with improved feed conversion,” he said.

Dr Jacob Sarpah and Dr Hagan, a pathologist from the University of Ghana, also made presentations on Legon rice and industrial sugarcane development, respectively.

They highlighted improved rice varieties developed through local research to enhance productivity and climate resilience.

Dr Derrick Yamoah Gyasi of African Agribusiness Consortium, explaining a climate-smart rice technology, said controlled water use through piezometers could reduce methane emissions by 50 per cent and cut water use by 30 per cent.

“We monitor water levels daily to ensure they do not exceed five centimeters, which helps suppress methane production,” he explained.

Madam Fatima Yakubu, Mechanisation Coordinator at AAC, said the organisation was training 37 youth farmers, many of them women, under a Youth Farmer Entrepreneur Programme.

“Each trainee is allocated one hectare to practice the full technology, from water release to harvesting,” she noted, adding that AAC had procured about 700 tonnes of rice this year to provide ready markets for farmers.

Madam Rosemary Abbey, Director of Finance and Administration at the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, commended the institutions for the practical innovations displayed.

“The technologies presented here show that Ghana is on the right path to sustainable agriculture, and we encourage you to do even more,” she stated.
