Naval personnel set to embark on 3.1km swimming exercise

Sekondi (W/R), Nov. 18, GNA – Able Seaman (AB) Class Two Sarah Akutor, a personnel of the Ghana Navy, is set to embark on an ambitious swimming exercise, covering a distance of 3.1 kilometres from the Busua beach to Abokwa Island in the Western Region.

The exercise, to be embarked upon on Friday, 21 November, 2025, is dubbed: “Waves of Hope”.

It sought to raise funds in support of the Chief of Defence Staff’s (CDS) initiative of building a facility for special needs children of service personnel at the Five Garrison Command of the Ghana Armed Forces.

It was also to empower women to embrace swimming and showcase their endurance and resilience.

Commodore Eric Osei, Flag Officer Commanding (FOC), Naval Logistics Command, speaking at the launch of the exercise, at the Sekondi Naval Base, lauded AB2 Akutor for the initiative, and encouraged other personnel to support her to achieve her aim.

He said: “When I was briefed on this expedition, I was amazed and impressed because I consider this a laudable venture, and I commend AB2 Akutor for the initiative, while also encouraging personnel to draw inspiration from this initiative.”

He asked her team to offer her the needed support to ensure she completed the exercise successfully, while achieving its intended purpose.

AB2 Akutor, speaking to journalists on the side-lines, said her interest was in the well-being of children, and that she was embarking on the swimming exercise to raise funds to support the CDS to construct the facility for children with special needs at the Five Garrison Command.

She said: “I have always loved kids, especially their smiles, so I thought of doing something great to generate funds to support my CDS to achieve his initiative to put smiles on the faces of special needs children.”
