National Spelling Bee names 2026 semi-finalists; Tamale tops with 114

Accra, Nov. 28, GNA – The National Spelling Bee (TNSB) has released the official list of semi-finalists for its 2026 edition, recording increased participation and a historic rise in representation from northern Ghana.

More than 70 schools across the country have qualified for this stage, reflecting growing national interest in literacy and academic competitions.

A key highlight of this year’s list is the Northern Regional capital, Tamale, which is presenting 114 semi-finalists, the highest number ever recorded from any city since the programme began.

A statement issued to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on Friday said the milestone was significant for a region often underrepresented in national academic contests, and demonstrated the impact of efforts to expand access to the programme.

The TNSB, now in its 19th year, remains Ghana’s sole pathway to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in the United States.

The organisers said the programme’s value extended beyond spelling, explaining that months of preparation helped participants to strengthen vocabulary, comprehension, logic and analytical skills.

Ms Eugenia Tachie-Menson, Convener of TNSB, described the achievement as an affirmation of what was possible when opportunities were equitably distributed.

“Every year, these young people amaze us. Their passion, resilience and curiosity push us to keep improving the way we teach and engage with them,” she was quoted as saying.

The release said investments in technology over the past year had ensured that children in Accra, Tamale and smaller towns received the same quality of preparation.

Tamale’s performance showed that “when the playing field is level, brilliance emerges everywhere,” it said.

The 2026 Semi-Finals would be held across three days; November 29, December 12 and December 18, 2025, using a hybrid format that combines in-person and virtual participation.

More than 300 semi-finalists would compete for places in the National Finals scheduled for February 2026, the release said.

Each semi-finalist will receive gifts from Indomie, the title sponsor, as well as tokens from supporting partners.

The 19th edition of TNSB is supported by organisations including Indomie, DSTV, U.S. Embassy Accra, Rufus Green Parks, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Foundation, Fidelity Bank, Coconut Grove Regency Accra, B&FT and JOY FM.

Their support, the release noted, enables the programme to reach diverse communities and expand opportunities for learners nationwide.
