Last two bodies recovered after Italian avalanche kills five Germans

Rome, Nov 2, (dpa/GNA) – The two bodies still missing, after five German mountaineers died in an avalanche in the South Tyrol region in north-eastern Italy have been recovered, the Italian mountain rescue service reported on Sunday.

The bodies are those of a father and his daughter. Three bodies were recovered on Saturday, when the group was caught by the avalanche while ascending in the Ortler Alps. The mountain is a popular peak, due to its panoramic views in all directions.

The avalanche came down in the afternoon as the alpinists, were ascending the over 3,500-metre-high Vertainspitze.

According to the mountain rescue service, they were climbing independently in three groups, one of three and two of two.

Two men survived the accident and were taken to hospital in Bolzano, by helicopter.
