Tema, Nov. 06, GNA – The Dext Technology Limited, as part of the Dext IVL Innovation, Thailand, has organised a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) exhibition and quiz for 20 selected schools in Tema.
The schools, made up of 10 each from Tema Metro and Tema West, showcased basic scientific and engineering works aimed at solving daily life issues such as sanitation and clean energy.
The exhibited works include a hydraulic press, a respiration system, a solar eclipse, a smart irrigation system, plastic waste recycling, and a rainwater purification and collection system, among others.
Materials such as water sachets, papers, bottle covers, plastic bottles, cardboard, solar panels, and basic science materials were utilised for various projects.
Ms. Dorcas Seyram Abotsi, the Project Associate of Dext Technology Limited, speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview during the exhibition, said that the company, which initially adopted five schools in Tema to train on STEM, expanded it to 20 schools.
Ms. Abotsi noted that prior to the exhibition, facilitators from the selected schools received hands-on training on how to use the science set and teach the children to innovate and create solution-based items with it.
She added that this year over 2000 science sets were donated to 20 schools to build the pupils’ basic knowledge in STEM.
She said the aim of the project was to empower the pupils with critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Ms. Abotsi challenged the notion that Ghanaian students are only rote learners and could not do practical things, adding that they are capable when provided with the necessary resources.
She called on the government and education stakeholders to partner with them to provide schools with prototype STEM sets to equip students with the basic science, engineering, and technological skills they could build upon.
