Benso (W/R), Oct. 6, GNA-As part of efforts to keep the 30 electoral areas in the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality clean, the Assembly, in collaboration with the Environmental Health Department on Saturday organised a clean-up exercise in Benso.

The exercise was in support of the National Sanitation Day (NSD) initiative, and brought together traditional leaders, shop owners, traders, drivers, students, and Okada riders.

The residents closed their shops and suspended all business activities for a short period to allow the exercise to proceed smoothly.

They weeded, swept along the street, cleared chocked gutters, and gathered refuse, which was later hauled away by waste trucks.

Mr. Ebenezer Cobbinah, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Tarkwa-Nsuaem, who led the exercise, applauded the people of Benso for taking part in the exercise, and highlighted the need for more collective efforts to keep the area clean.

He urged the community to make the exercise a regular practice because one month of clean-up might not be enough to create lasting change in the municipality.

Mr. Alex Damtey, the Municipal Environmental Health Officer of Tarkwa Nsuaem, said management of the assembly has planned to rotate the NSD across all the thirty electoral areas within the municipality.

“We have organised two clean-up exercises, and the turnout was good, but the recent one we embarked on in Benso was extraordinary. We want to thank the Benso community and hope they will continue the good work” he added.

Mr. Damtey suggested that the community should hold a mini clean-up exercise on Saturdays and Sundays of every month to prevent waste from building up and becoming a bigger problem.

Mr Frank Justin Afful, the Assembly member of Benso electoral area, acknowledged the efforts of colleagues from other electoral areas and the community for contributing to the success of the exercise.
