Tripoli, Aug 31. (dpa/GNA) – Representatives of Libya’s rival parties, signed an agreement on Sunday, to pave the way for holding long-delayed national elections within two years, under unified national institutions and executive authority.
Oil-rich Libya descended into chaos, following the 2011 armed revolt that toppled long-time dictator Moamer Gaddafi. It has become a battleground for rival proxy forces, which has in turn drawn in foreign powers.
Two camps, the internationally recognized Government of National Unity based in the capital Tripoli and General Khalifa Haftar’s government in the eastern city of Tobruk – are currently vying for power.
Elections were supposed to take place at the end of 2021, but were cancelled over disputes about the electoral law.
In a statement, the United Nations said the signing marked “an important step toward advancing Libya’s political process and creating the conditions for national elections.”
The agreement provides for adjustments to the electoral framework, including arrangements for presidential and legislative elections.
The UN mission in Libya will continue working with stakeholders to support implementation of the agreement, and advance the unification of state institutions capable of leading the country towards elections.
