Techiman (Bono East) Oct. 4, GNA – The Assistant Superintendent of Police, (ASP) Gideon Nanteeb Gutin, the Bono East Regional Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) has expressed concern about rising cases of road crashes in the region.

He said at least three or more crashes occurred every day, particularly on the Techiman-Akumadan-Offinso as well as the Techiman-Buipe highways and called for collective efforts to bring the situation under control to save lives and properties.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Techiman, ASP Gutin said crash fatalities were also surging, saying at least one death was recorded daily.

He said a total of 119 road crashes were recorded between March and September 2025, with 30 of them being fatal, 36 serious and 48 minor.

The crashes involved 112 vehicles comprising 66 commercial and 46 private vehicles, he stated.

He said 34 persons were killed with 259 of them sustaining various degrees of injuries adding that 24 tricycles and two motorbikes also crashed within the period.

ASP Gutin attributed the causes of the crashes partly to driver errors like excessive speeding, wrongful overtaking, and substance abuse like alcoholism by some of the commercial drivers.

He said the MTTD was undertaking snap-check operation on some of the major and crashes-prone highways in the region to bring the situation under the barest minimum.

ASP Gutin expressed concern about the growing substance abuse among tricycle (Pragya) riders in the region, and called for stakeholder support to tackle the issue.

He said the Department in collaboration with other road agencies and stakeholders had intensified public education on road safety, and called for more support towards sensitising drivers and motorists on road safety regulations and signs to bring sanity on the highways.

ASP Gutin cautioned drivers against drunk-driving and carelessness on the road, saying offenders would be prosecuted.

He cited that a crash involving a Rhino Truck with registration number AC 1763-20 loaded with lumber and traveling from Kumasi to Bolgatanga happened on the Techiman-Tanoso stretch just around the Techiman Senior High School on Friday October 3, 2025.

ASP Gutin said though no casualty was reported in that crash, the highway was blocked for some hours and urged drivers using that particular highway to be wary of the sharp-curves, remained vigilant and observed the road signs.
