Jinijini, (Bono), Oct. 4, GNA – Nana Kusi Amoa Gyan, the Patron of the Berekum branch of the Ghana National Association of Garment Makers has urged local garment manufacturers to serve as mentors to their apprentices.
He said besides their training, apprentices learnt a lot from their masters and urged the manufacturers to live exemplary lives and avoid unhealthy lifestyles that could potentially influence the apprentices under them.
Nana Gyan, also the Chief of Amankokwaa, a farming community at the Berekum West District of the Bono Region gave the advice at a meeting of the Association at Berekum and urged the local manufacturers to do more in shaping the character and skills of their trainees.
“The masters must focus on teaching and guiding their trainees rather than merely punishing them for some mistakes,” he advised.
Nana Gyan noted that their craft had evolved, with many trainee graduates pursuing careers in fashion design, and urged families to encourage their children to learn employable skills training to create decent jobs for themselves.
He said garment manufacturing was also a lucrative enterprise, assuring that the association was also doing more to help tackle emerging challenges in the sector, and urged the teeming employed youth in the area to engage in craft.
Nana Gyan called on the government to support interested young people to learn garment manufacturing and also support the local manufacturers to expand their workshops and businesses.
Mrs Grace Anane, the Financial Secretary of the branch called on the government to create a more conducive environment for the private sector to thrive for job creation and poverty reduction.
