Government to facilitate procurement of buses for Intercity STC

Accra, Oct.3, GNA – Mrs Dorcas Affo-Toffey, Deputy Minister of Transport, says the government will facilitate the procurement of additional buses for the Intercity State Transport Company (STC) to enhance operations.

She said the transport industry played a key role in facilitating trade and businesses to spur economic development.

The Deputy Minister said this on Thursday when she toured the STC head office in Accra to familiarise herself with their operations.

She also toured the Metro Mass Transit (MMT).

The visit was also to interact with the staff, learn, hear their challenges and chart the way forward towards the improvement of the sector.

Mrs Affo-Toffey said these initiatives were part of the government’s reset agenda to improve the transportation sector and serve the citizenry in an efficient and effective manner.

“President John Dramani Mahama remains committed to using the 24-hour economy to boost transportation in the country and beyond,” she said.

She said over the years, the STC established itself as a preferred state transporter through professionalism and safety measures.

These reputations, she stressed, had witnessed challenges, impacting on the revenue of the company, pledging government support to address the situation.

She commended the staff for their dedication and pledged government support in addressing their grievances to enhance productivity.

Mr Alhassan Ligbi, Managing Director, Intercity STC, commended the government for working to address the low number of fleets in the company.

The company currently has 151 buses, of which seven per cent are faulty, while 50 are operational.

He said the majority of the company’s operations were outsourced, and they were working to reclaim them and provide better services to the nation.

As part of the company’s strategic plan, Mr Ligbi said the company would also have electric vehicles to boost the green economy.

He said the company would seek investors to establish an electric vehicle plant in the country, adding that the company intended to achieve financial sustainability.

He said the company would soon expand its operations in Liberia, Benin, Togo and other unnerved countries, creating a niche market in the West African region.

At the MMT, Mr Kale Cesar, the Managing Director, underscored the importance of an effective transportation system in resetting the country.

He said the company used to have over 1,000 buses, but now had 115, with some being serviced and others broken down and unserviceable.

On achievement, he said the company had increased its revenue to Ghc 84,642,852, representing 22 per cent with 162 routes from January to August, 2025.

He appealed to the Deputy Minister to help address the infrastructure challenges of the company and the conditions of service for workers to motivate them to give off their best.

The Deputy Minister assured the company of government resolve to address their concerns, urging them not to give up in their quest to serve mother Ghana.
