San Jose, California, Oct 21, (dpa/GNA) – Former NFL running back, Doug Martin, died while in police custody after a break-in, the Oakland Police Department (OPD) said on Monday.
The 36-year-old died on Saturday during a police operation, the OPD said in a statement posted on Facebook.
“Prior to his death, Martin was involved in a break-in at a residence in Oakland. While responding officers were attempting to detain him, a brief struggle occurred. After being taken into custody, Martin became unresponsive,” the OPD said.
“Paramedics responded to the scene, provided medical aid, and transported Martin to a local hospital, where he later died.”
An investigation into Martin’s death was ongoing, the force said.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who drafted Martin in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft, said that the player “made a lasting impact on our franchise.”
“He was a fan favourite during his time in Tampa Bay, and was honored as one of the Top 50 Buccaneers of all time for his numerous achievements.”
In his seven NFL seasons, Martin scored 30 rushing touchdowns and two more on catches. He was selected to the Pro Bowl, which honours the best players of the season,twice and was also named to the NFL’s First Team All-Pro once.
He played six seasons with the Buccaneers and one season with the then-Oakland Raiders (who have since relocated to Las Vegas). He played his last NFL game in December 2018.
