Los Angeles, Oct 16, (dpa/GNA) – Diane Keaton, who starred in iconic films like “The Godfather” and “Annie Hall,” died of pneumonia, her family said.
In a statement to People magazine late Wednesday, the family said they were “very grateful for the extraordinary messages of love and support they have received these past few days.”
The announcement of the death of the Oscar-winning actress on October 11 at the age of 79, triggered an outpouring of tributes from fans and Hollywood figures.
“She loved her animals and she was steadfast in her support of the unhoused community, so any donations in her memory to a local food bank or an animal shelter would be a wonderful and much appreciated tribute to her,” the family said.
Keaton rose to fame in the 1970s for her role in Woody Allen’s “Annie Hall,” which earned her the Academy Award for best actress, and launched a decades-long career in film.
She was also widely remembered for her role as Kay Adams Corleone, the wife of Al Pacino’s Michael Corleone, in the “The Godfather” trilogy.
Her decades-long career in Hollywood also included “Reds,” “Father of the Bride” and “Something’s Gotta Give.”
Born in 1946 in Los Angeles, Keaton grew up in Santa Ana, California, with three siblings. She trained as an actress in New York, and made her Broadway debut at age 22 in the musical “Hair.”
