Rome, Sept 23, (dpa/GNA) – Several rivers burst their banks in northern Italy on Monday, after heavy rainfall.
In various municipalities, such as the town of Cabiate between Milan and Lake Como, the water flowed knee-high through the streets. Landslides occurred in the region.
Several railway lines including the Como-Chiasso line have been interrupted.
Meteorologists are predicting more rain for the next few days.
The rescue services have deployed helicopters to help people who are trapped in their homes by the water.
More than a dozen holidaymakers were brought to safety from a campsite, who had been surprised by the rainfall during the night. One woman is missing.
The metropolis of Milan, the capital of the Lombardy region, was also affected. The river Seveso overflowed its banks there.
The city council urged residents and visitors to be cautious in the vicinity of the river. Residents were also asked to leave green spaces and parks.
