Teshie, Sept. 19, GNA – The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Ledzokuku Municipal Assembly office, has launched civic education clubs in some schools within the municipality.

Mr Nicholas Tetteh Atiogbe, the Municipal Director for the NCCE, said that civic education was key and aimed at educating the youth on civic issues, using school initiative through the formation clubs in the selected schools.

Mr Atiogbe stated that the public needed sensitisation on the rules and regulations governing the country, as well as the rights and responsibilities of citizens.

He explained that because children were deemed as the future leaders of tomorrow’s society, providing them with the right civic information would effectively prepare them to become good citizens, and help solve some of the country’s critical challenges, such as the destruction of the environment.

He advised the youth to join the civic education clubs in their schools for guidance and coaching on becoming good citizens.

The NCCE director called on philanthropists and institutions to support the initiative to help groom the lives of students to become responsible citizens.

He mentioned some of the activities for the clubs as educational trips and quizzes, among others.

Miss Getrude Okailey Niikwei, a student at the Ford School Limited and the president of the school’s civic club, said the clubs would help students to know more about the constitution as well as their constitutional rights and responsibilities, to enable them to become better citizens.

Miss Niikwei noted that the club had different activities that students could learn from and encouraged her mates and other students to join the civic clubs to learn more about the country and the world around them.

Miss Princess Okai, a student of the Ebenezer Preparatory School, underscored the critical role these clubs could play in shaping the knowledge of students on their rights and responsibilities as well as developing strategies for improving their local environment and beyond.
