Accra, Sep,08, GNA-The 2025 KGL Foundation Millennium Marathon saw a record-breaking turnout on Saturday, with Kenyan athletes achieving a historic clean sweep of medals in both the men’s and women’s events.
The marathon served as a mega event to celebrate the 5th anniversary of the KGL Foundation, the CSR arm of the KGL Group.
KGL Foundation has played a pivotal role in the development of sports in Ghana, serving as a key force behind many of the country’s most successful sporting events.
The 21km and 5km races featured athletes from Ghana, alongside some of the continent’s top long-distance runners.
The race began at the forecourt of Access Bank, Osu Oxford Street Branch, Cantonments and other parts of Accra and finished at the Black Stars square.
Kenya maintained its reputation as the producers of long-distance runners with athletes running through the first position to the third position in the 21km race.
Gilbert Kiprotich carried the day in the men’s 21km with a time of 1:00:59, while his compatriots Alfred Cherunoi finished second with 1:01:04, and Paul Eyanae completed the campaign with a time of 1:02:12 in third position.
The dominance extended to the women’s 21km marathon, as Hympha Kiteta placed first with a time of 1:07:42 followed by Lucy Ndambuki and Eupke Muchiri who finished with 1:10:25 and 1:13:00 respectively.
Ghana came into the game to show its prowess in the men’s 5km race as Abotsi Daniel Gawuga, Emmanuel Kwatey, and Germain K. Dzorgbesi sealed the medal zone respectively.
In the women’s category Anai Jennifer, Tuolong Rener, and Bramah Rabiatu also proved their worth to secure gold, silver, and bronze.
Mr. Elliot Dadey, CEO of the KGL Foundation, extolled the success of the marathon while also acknowledging the growth of the Foundation as it celebrates its fifth anniversary.
“To be honest it’s been an amazing journey. I think we started from nothing really and then eventually we kind of started expanding. Currently, we, KGL Foundation are now working in every single region of the country”,
He stated that the KGL Foundation Millennium Marathon had expanded to numerous countries across Africa, an achievement he never expected to accomplish in such a short time.
Mr. Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, Director General of the National Sports Authority lauded the efforts of the KGL foundation and the success of the marathon, assuring participants of a much bigger event in the coming years.
Winners of the various events were awarded trophies and cash prizes from KGL Foundation.
