Accra, Sept 1, GNA – Mr Albert Kofi Owusu, General Manager of the Ghana News Agency (GNA), has praised the legacy and leadership of the late Nana Kwasi Gyan-Apenteng for integrity, excellence and humility.

At a Literary Sunday event at the forecourt of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation to honour the veteran journalist, he described the former GNA Board Chair as “a true statesman” and “a guiding light” in media.

Mr. Owusu paid tribute to the affable character and collaborative approach of the Apagyahene of Eti Amanfrom, who died in May this year.

“As Chairman of the National Media Commission (NMC), he played a key role in protecting press freedom and supporting a strong democratic media,” he said

“He brought to the GNA Board not only his vast experience in journalism and governance but also a rare warmth and humility that endeared him to all,” he added.

“His dual identity as a media stalwart and traditional leader made him a rare bridge between modern civic engagement and traditional authority.”

“We at GNA are deeply grateful for the privilege of working with him and learning from his example. He will be remembered as a gentleman of letters, a custodian of values and a devoted servant of truth,” Mr. Owusu said.

Members of the Ghana Association of Writers shared memories of the veteran journalist, poet and former GAW President at the event.

Prof Esi Sutherland-Addy described him as “cosmopolitan” and “incomparable” and urged protégés to “step up and demonstrate what they have learnt from him.”

Mr. Kabral Blay-Amihere, former NMC Chairman, said: “He was a great writer, a man full of ideas and nothing could stop him from what he wanted to do.”

Madam Comfort Asare, former NMC member, noted that his legacy will endure as he “lived with purpose and walked with grace.”

Dr Francis Gbormittah, former GAW President, announced plans to revive the association in his honour.

Performances by Osei Korankyi, flutist Alabi and pupils of the Humanity Intellectual Academy and College livened the occasion.

A commemorative book launch will be held on 21 September 2025 at GNAT Hall, Accra, ahead of final funeral rites from 2 to 5 October 2025 in Eti Amanfrom, New Tafo-Akyem, Eastern Region.

Also among the GNA delegation were Mrs. Beatrice Asamani Savage, Director, Editorial; Mr. George-Ramsey Benamba, Chief Editor, Home Desk; and Mr. Kenneth Sackey, Deputy News Editor.
