Cairo, Sept 10, (dpa/GNA) – Khalil al-Hayya, the highest-ranking Hamas leader abroad, survived the Israeli strike in Qatar, according to a member of the Islamist group.
A son of al-Hayya and his chief of staff were killed, the Hamas official, Suhail al-Hindi, told the Qatari broadcaster Al Jazeera.
Other Arab media outlets with close ties to Qatar reported the same.
Qatar’s Interior Ministry said one security officer was killed and several others injured. Several people connected to Hamas appear to have died in the attack, with multiple fatalities reported to the dpa from Hamas sources.
The organization has yet to publicly comment on its official channels following the strike.
Al-Hayya has previously lost several family members in the conflict with Israel. His wife, three children, and three brothers were killed, when Israel’s military bombed his home in the Gaza Strip in 2007, while al-Hayya survived the attack.
Since the start of the Gaza conflict nearly two years ago, Israel has killed numerous senior Hamas leaders and commanders in the Gaza Strip, including Yahya al-Sinwar and Mohammed Deif.
Israel also killed former Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh in a strike in Tehran last year.
