Accra, Aug. 22, GNA- Madam Shirley Kyei, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Atwima Nwabiagya South, has raised concerns over delayed road projects in her constituency.
She called on the Department of Urban Roads to provide clear timelines for the completion of works in the Ashanti Region, particularly the Maakro-Agogo road, which she said had been left incomplete for an extended period.
“I am worried because, according to the Auditor-General’s report, the Department of Urban Roads in Kumasi spent over GH¢62 million on various projects, many of which have been abandoned for between 48 to 56 months,” she stated at a Public Accounts Committee sitting in Parliament, Accra.
Officials of the Department of Urban Roads, responding at the sitting, attributed the delays to challenges in releasing payments to contractors.
They explained that the extended delay had significantly increased the cost of completing some of the projects.
They added, “Some contracts have been recommended for termination and will be re-awarded,” and expressed optimism that repackaged works would commence “by the end of the year,” subject to funding availability.
Madam Kyei stressed the adverse effects of the situation on local residents and urged the Ministry of Roads and Highways to prioritise the completion of these projects, noting that adequate funds were available for the works.
