AGI and World Bank Launch Energy Smart Businesses Initiative in Ghana

Accra, Aug. 29, GNA – The Association of Ghana Industries – Energy Service Centre (AGI-ESC), with support from the World Bank, has officially launched the Energy Smart Businesses pilot initiative to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Under the project, SMEs in the agribusiness, garment/textiles, and hospitality sectors would receive assistance to significantly reduce their energy consumption, lower their operational costs, and improve their sustainability through tailored technical support.

Over the next six months, 35 selected businesses operating in Ghana will receive free on-site energy audits, customized energy saving recommendations, hands on training for their staff and an opportunity to join a national energy efficiency peer learning network.

“SMEs are vital to Ghana’s economy but face high energy costs that limit their growth. This pilot project provides the tools and expertise to help businesses operate more efficiently and competitively, while also enabling them to serve as pioneers and role models for other SMEs through the implementation of energy efficiency measures,” said Baerbel Freyer, Chief Technical Officer of the AGI-ESC.

The Energy Smart Businesses pilot project is expected to serve as proof of concept for scaling energy efficiency interventions across the country and building local capacity in sustainable energy management.

It is funded by the World Bank and interested companies can apply online via www.agiesc.com before September 30, 2025.

The selection process will prioritize businesses with significant energy usage and strong potential for impact.
