Ayawaso West Assembly gives developers two-month ultimatum to regularise their building permits

Accra, July 11, GNA – The Ayawaso West Municipal Assembly has given property owners and estate developers two months to regularise their building permits with the Assembly.

A statement signed by Mr Jacob Shamatey on behalf of the Municipal Chief Executive and copied to the Ghana News Agency said the move formed part of efforts to ensure full compliance with planning and building regulations and to safeguard public safety.

The Assembly cautioned that failure by the property owners and estate developers to take advantage of the two months window, stringent enforcement measures would be taken against them.

“These will include the issuance of stop-work orders, demolition of unauthorised structures, and the prosecution of offenders as stipulated by law,” it stated.

The statement said the Assembly had noted proliferation of unauthorised structures across the municipality while others have questionable permits allegedly issued by other Assemblies.

It pointed out that the Ayawaso West Municipal Assembly was established by law in 2018 and, as such, all valid permits must bear its official endorsement.

It indicated that some of the structures under scrutiny included large buildings sited dangerously close to major roads.

It said in addressing the situation, the Assembly had begun an extensive inventory of unpermitted buildings in key areas such as Shiashie, Airport Residential Area, Roman Ridge, Dzorwulu, East Legon, West Legon, and other parts of the municipality.

The statement urged all affected property owners to take advantage of the grace period to engage the Assembly’s Physical Planning Department and complete the regularisation process.

“This initiative is aimed at promoting orderly development, protecting residents, and positioning the municipality as a preferred destination for both investors and homeowners,” it explained.
