Abura Amosima (C/R), June 27, GNA- Nana Aba Egyirba II, Queenmother of Nsona No.1 Royal Family of Abura Amosima in the Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese District of the Central Region, has advised females in the area not to engage in transactional sex for sanitary pads.

According to her, poverty and the inability of some parents to provide sanitary pads for their female children had compelled many girls in the area to indulge in irresponsible and risky sexual behaviour to meet basic needs.

Sharing 200 sanitary pads for girls in five communities in the District, Nana Egyirba, known in private life as Mrs Mariam Grace Mensah, expressed concern that some of the girls got pregnant along the way and dropped out of school.

The beneficiary communities are Abura Adukrom, Asebu, Brafoyaw, Amosima and Akonoma.

“Apart from unwanted pregnancies and other complications, one can easily contract HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases from the act,” she noted, and counselled young girls to stop that behaviour.

Nana Egyirba charged parents to take time to educate their children, particularly, adolescent girls on sexual and reproductive health and also relate with them in a manner that would win their confidence.

She further called for support to address the economic needs of poor families to help curtail teen pregnancies and its related health issues.

Ms Felicia Amoah, a student, on behalf of other beneficiaries, expressed gratitude to the Queen mother, saying the constant supply of free sanitary pads would keep them in school during menstrual cycle to continue learning and become great in future.
