Accra, June 05, GNA- The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Minority Caucus in Parliament has announced plans to stage protests in the coming days against the government’s decision to increase the price of petroleum products by one Ghana Cedi.

Addressing journalists in Parlaiment House, in Accra, on Thursday, Mr. Frank Annoh-Dompreh, the Minority Chief Whip, said the government’s move contradicted the government’s earlier call for commercial drivers to reduce transport fares by 15 per cent.

He described the fuel levy hike as a “stab in the back” to Ghanaians already struggling with economic hardship.

“This is not just about a one cedi increase, it is about the soul of our nation. If you look at the impact analysis that they did, it is suspect in my view,” he said.

Mr. Annoh-Dompreh, also the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, urged Ghanaians to join the Minority Caucus in opposing the increase in the levy, calling it an “unjust economically devastating tax that Ato and his government have forced on us.”

He called on the government to immediately withdraw or reduce the levy, warning that the opposition will escalate its actions if the demand is not met.

According to the Minority Chief Whip, the Minority Caucus considered the fuel levy hike “draconian, insensitive, and an action that depicts a government that is out of touch with the people of this country and the NDC is truly revealing its true colours.”

He emphasised that the NPP will stage several actions in solidarity with the Ghanaian people to demand the withdrawal or reversal of the tax.
