Keta (VR), June 27, GNA-Residents in the Keta Municipality of the Volta Region have called on Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MDCEs) across the region to comply with President John Dramani Mahama’s directive to declare their assets within the stipulated period.
They said the move would enhance transparency and accountability in public office without any speculation and unfounded accusations.
Mr. Benjamin Kofi Hamenu, a retired teacher at Vui, a suburb of Keta, in a interview with the Ghana News Agency, said the directive from the president for all MMDCEs to declare their assets by July 15, 2025 was part of the government’s efforts to promote integrity and accountability at the district levels.
“The President has made it clear that he expects all MMDCEs to comply with this directive and l don’t think declaration of assets could be anything difficult to comply with,” he said.
He explained that declaration of assets would help to prevent corruption, and would ensure that public officials were held to high standards of integrity according to the Public Office Holders Declaration of Assets and Disqualification Act, 1998 (Act 550), which mandated all public officers to declare their assets and liabilities upon assumption of office.
Mr. Hamenu advised that any MMDCE or government appointee, who would fail to comply with the directive within the period should be dismissed to serve as an example to others.
“We all believe that this call is a good idea which will help to promote transparency and accountability in public offices and ensure that the MMDCEs are held responsible.”
Madam Selikem Amenyo, a business woman, also told the GNA that the call for transparency and accountability in public offices was crucial to help build trust and ensure that public officials worked in the best interests of the people.
She said MMDCEs played a critical role in local governance processes and it was important they remain transparent and accountable in their dealings.
Some other residents GNA engaged expressed mixed reaction to the call while others believed that MMDCEs asset declaration was important to curb speculations, allegations of theft and unnecessary anxieties, among others.
