Ho (V/R), June 18, GNA – The Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE), in collaboration with the Mastercard Foundation and the Ho Technical University has awarded scholarships to 57 underprivileged students at the Ho Technical University (HTU).
The award ceremony, held on June 17, 2025, also served as a stakeholder engagement forum aimed at promoting access, equity, and excellence in girls’ education.
The initiative seeks to empower young women through education so they can transform their communities and contribute meaningfully to national development.
Ms. Anna Nabere, Programmes Manager of FAWE Ghana, explained that the scholarship extends beyond just the payment of tuition fees.
“It is a holistic support system designed to ensure that every recipient is fully equipped to succeed and lead,” she said.
The comprehensive scholarship package includes full tuition and fees, learning materials, including a laptop, boarding or transport support, Mentorship and counselling, Life skills and leadership training, exposure to innovation opportunities
“Our goal is not just to get you into school, but to ensure that you stay in school, perform well, and emerge as confident, capable change-makers,” she emphasised.
Ms. Nabere urged the awardees to take the opportunity seriously and use it as a steppingstone for personal growth and national development.
She also expressed appreciation to the parents for their encouragement and sacrifices, urging them to remain active participants in their children’s educational journey.
Dr. Leticia Effah-Manu, Gender Affairs Officer at HTU, lauded the scholarship initiative, saying it aligns with the University’s commitment to inclusive education—an agenda championed by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ben Honyenuga and the university’s management.
She noted that such support helps break down financial and systemic barriers that hinder the progress of many bright students, particularly young women.
Prof. Ben Honyenuga, Vice Chancellor of HTU, highlighted the role of the University in technical and vocational education and training (TVET). He said HTU is proud to be part of an initiative that fosters leadership, enhances career readiness, and drives inclusive and high-quality education.
“At HTU, we have witnessed young people from disadvantaged backgrounds transform into confident, skilled, and purpose-driven leaders,” he said.
“We are committed to creating an environment where dreams can take root and flourish.”
He encouraged the beneficiaries to embrace their academic journey with dedication and become agents of change.
“You are not just recipients of a scholarship; you are the bearers of hope and promise for your families, communities, and Ghana.”
Prof. Honyenuga also reaffirmed the University’s commitment to strengthening partnerships and improving teaching and learning outcomes.
Mrs. Thywill Eyra Kpe, Volta Regional Director of the Department of Gender, commended parents for their continued role in their children’s lives.
She celebrated the decision of many awardees to pursue non-traditional fields of study, saying it sets a positive precedent for others.
Using the biblical parable of the talents, she advised the students to make the most of the opportunity.
“Whatever you have been given, nurture it, grow it, and use it wisely. In two to three years, you should be the mentors inspiring others to enter these fields,” she said.
The event marked a significant step toward building a more inclusive and empowered generation through education in the Volta Region and beyond.
