Dambai (O/R), May 28, GNA – Two women in the Oti Region have been diagnosed with fistula, a condition that causes constant leakage of urine, stool and significantly impacting a woman’s quality of life.
Ms Veronica Kaka, Oti Regional Public Health Nurse, confirmed this to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), that efforts were underway to provide surgical repair for the affected women.
She explained that fistula was a serious medical condition that occured, when there was an abnormal hole in the birth canal caused by prolonged and obstructed labour during childbirth, usually occurring between the intestines, bladder and the female organ.
Madam Kaka said this could cause constant leakage of urine or stool, leading to physical discomfort, emotional distress, and social isolation.
She said the Ghana Health Service, in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), is working to provide necessary medical care and surgical attention to the women.
She told GNA that, due to the region’s shortage of specialist doctors, the procedure would be carried out in collaboration with larger facilities in cities.
Ms. Kaka has urged women with similar issues to report to nearby health facilities for medical attention and support.
This initiative aims to improve the well-being of women in the Oti Region and address the challenges posed by fistula.
