Kambatiak, (NE/R), May 23, GNA – YAAPA-Ghana, a non-government organisation (NGO), in collaboration with BISU’s Women’s Commission, has distributed sanitary pads to eight schools in six communities in the Bunkpurugu-Nakpanduri District to support girls during their menstrual period.

The beneficiary communities included Kambatiak, Guanbiang, Najong One and Two, Jilik and  Kinkangu.

The gesture was under the Pad Her project of YAAPA-Ghana with the aim to ending period poverty and restoring confidence in girls in rural areas.

Ms Kristen Chimbar, a Representative from YAAPA GHANA, speaking during the distribution to the schools in the North East Region, said most of the girls had challenges to attend school during their menstrual period due to lack of sanitary pads.

She said: “Some of the girls feel ashamed simply because they are in their menstrual period and their parents could not afford to buy them sanitary pads.”

She said the situation had become a barrier to most of the girls’ education in rural areas, which affected their learning.

Ms Chimbar urged parents, school authorities and policymakers to make menstrual health a national conversation to address some of the challenges in the schools to promote girl-child education.
