Sunyani, (Bono), May 01, GNA – Mr Joseph Addae Akwaboa, the Bono Regional Minister on Thursday, affirmed the government commitment to enhance the general wellbeing of formal sector employees. Under President John Dramani Mahama’s government, he said workers would equitably receive good remuneration, to foster a sense of inclusion for improving productivity and to spur economic growth and development.
Mr Akwaboa said this when he addressed a parade of workers at the Sunyani Jubilee Park to commemorate the annual celebration of the workers day (May Day) on the theme: “Resetting pay and working conditions in Ghana: the role of stakeholders”.
The Regional Minister emphasised that the government recognised the legitimate concerns of workers on wages, job security, and working conditions, assuring that the government would consistently organised labour to address those concerns.
Mr Akwaboa said significant efforts had been made to enhance job productivity, workers welfare, and conditions of service, stating the government’s position to implement policies to create more jobs.
Mr Francis Owusu Antwi, the Bono East Regional Minister, who joined the celebration called for collaboration between employers and employees to promote a good working environment for enhanced productivity.
He urged organised labour to lead in promoting equitable labour practices and improved conditions of service for workers.
“By working together, we can create a better Ghana that respects and safeguards the rights of all workers,” Mr Antwi added.
Madam Comfort Asomah, the Bono, Bono East and Ahafo Regional Secretary of the Trade Unions Congress (TUC) said the theme for the celebration remained essential and served as a call for change, “not just in our valuation of labour, but also in how we envision the future of work, compensation, and the welfare of workers in Ghana”.
“It is therefore time to advocate for a complete overhaul of the wage system in Ghana,” she stated, saying “the existing framework for determining salaries is insufficient for care and fails to adequately represent the current cost of living”.
A total of 18 deserving workers from the Bono, Bono East, and Ahafo regions were recognised for their hard work.
