Adaklu Kodzobi (V/R), May 26, GNA – Drivers in the Adaklu district continue to charge the old fares in defiance of the directive by the leadership of the driver unions in the country.
The leadership of driver unions, the Ghana Private Road and Transport Union (GPRTU) and Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC), have directed all commercial drivers in the country to reduce fares by 15 percent effective 24th May, 2025.
A survey conducted by the Ghana News Agency on Sunday, at the Ho Central Market Day, which was a busy day for both drivers and traders, revealed that despite complaints by passengers, the drivers remained adamant.
Some of the drivers GNA spoke to said running a transport business was not only about fuel and lubricants.
They said apart from the reduction in the cost of fuel, the costs of tyres, spare parts and taxes remained the same.
They stated that the government should consider reducing Vehicle Income Tax, Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority charges and Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies levies.
One of the drivers stated that the fares they were charging were fixed by their leaders in Ho and that not until they received an official notice from their leaders in Ho, they would not reduce the fares.
A passenger who chose to remain unanimous called on the District Chief Executive and other stakeholders in the district to call the drivers to order.
Mr. Mark Dodzi Hoenyekor, Presiding Member of the Adaklu District Assembly, who is also the Assemblyman for Helekpe Electoral Area said they would engage the leadership of the drivers in the district to address the issue.
