Sege, March 14, GNA – Madam Millicent Ohui MacCarthy, the Ada West District Environmental Health Officer, has advised the public to ensure proper sanitation practices by sustaining a clean and healthy environment as a way of life.

Madam MacCarthy, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), during a visit to assess the sanitation conditions in the district, stressed the importance of segregation of refuse for healthier sanitation.

She cited examples from other countries where households use different dustbins for various types of waste, promoting a culture of responsible waste management.

Madam MacCarthy said, the recent cholera outbreak in the area was largely attributed to open defecation and unsanitary living conditions.

Despite ongoing efforts, many Ghanaians remained complacent about sanitation, highlighting the need for increased awareness and education.

She disclosed that authorities were taking steps to improve sanitation in the region, stating further that the District Environmental Health Department had collaborated with local communities on a pilot sanitation exercise, which was currently underway.

Madam MacCarthy added that efforts were being made to make the Greater Accra Region the cleanest in the country.

She indicated that proper storage and disposal of polythene bags and rubbers would prevent them from being carried around by the wind.

She emphasised the importance of responsible waste management, urging the public to maintain clean surroundings and environments to prevent food and air contamination.

Meanwhile, during a visit to Sege Township, GNA observed a significant littering of used polythene and rubber waste.

Community members attributed this to the wind carrying waste from unknown areas, citing the community’s proximity to the sea as a contributing factor.
