Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives inaugurates new Rector and appeals for new building complex

Accra, March 5, GNA – The Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives (GCNM) has inaugurated a new Rector to lead its new administration following the retirement of the former Rector.

They also appealed for a new building complex and sponsorship for students to deliver excellence in nursing and midwifery services.

The inauguration and induction ceremony, which was held in Accra, was on the theme: “Nursing And Midwifery Specialization: A Tool For Improved Quality Care”.

In her inaugural speech, Dr Gloria Achempim-Ansong, the new Rector of GCNM, said her vision was to position the collage as a global leader in nursing and midwifery specialists’ education, research, and innovation, adding that the college would not only meet the healthcare needs of today but also anticipate and prepare for the challenges of tomorrow.

She envisioned a College which would prioritize research that addressed the pressing healthcare needs of the nation, particularly in areas such as maternal and child health, infectious diseases, and non-communicable diseases.

“We will also establish a robust research culture by providing faculty and students with the resources, mentorship, and opportunities needed to conduct impactful research”, she added.

Dr Achempim-Ansong pledged to deepen collaborations between international partnerships to foster knowledge exchange, collaborative research, and global best practices. “We will position the College as a hub for nursing and midwifery education in Africa, attracting students and faculty from across the continent and beyond”.

She assured students of prioritizing academic success, well-being, and professional development to create a conducive learning environment, expand internship opportunities, and foster partnerships with leading healthcare institutions to ensure that they received the best possible training and exposure.

“As I assume this role, I pledge to build on the foundations you have laid. I am committed to working diligently and navigating the complexities of this position with integrity, wisdom, and a deep commitment to our institution’s mission”, Dr Achempim-Ansong said.

Professor Victoria Bam, President of the GCNM, called on the Minister of Health to support the college to provide a new facility to improve the healthcare services in the country.

She said the college had made strides and as a beacon and distinguished college in West Africa. “I take this opportunity to express profound appreciation to our out-going rector for impressive job done on delivering in the mandate as a specialist college”, she added

Mr Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, Minister for Health, who was the Guest speaker said, the Ministry was committed to deepening collaborations with the College and other stakeholders to enhance healthcare delivery, expand training opportunities, and ensure that healthcare professionals were well-equipped to meet both national and global health challenges.

He implored healthcare professionals to take action in and work with integrity as the life of the nation depended on them.

Responding to the appeal of a new structure, he assured the college of holding a dialogue with its administration to ensure the building was established.
