Berlin, Mar. 9, (dpa/GNA) – The German Foreign Office on Sunday condemned the recent outbreak of violence between Syria’s new rulers and supporters of the ousted regime of Bashar al-Assad and called on all sides to end the fighting.
“Reports of the murder of civilians and prisoners are shocking,” the Foreign Office said in Berlin. “The transitional government is responsible for ensuring that further attacks are prevented, for investigating the incidents and for bringing those responsible to justice,” it said.
All Syrians had to have a role in the country’s future, irrespective of ethnicity, religion or sex, the Foreign Office statement said.
The European Union also condemned all violence directed at civilians.
According to activists, more than 1,000 people have died in the recent violence. The security forces of the Islamist transitional government are reported to have perpetrated “massacres” on members of the Alawite religious minority to which the al-Assad family belongs.
