Accra, Feb. 08, GNA – The University of Ghana recorded a surge in female enrolment, reaching 56.6 per cent.
This was disclosed at the 2024/2025 matriculation ceremony, which was held at the City Campus of the university.
Speaking to the matriculants, Professor Mark Sandow Yidana, Provost, College of Basic Applied Sciences, who read a speech on behalf of the Vice Chancellor, said out of the 11,548 students who enrolled at UG this academic year, a remarkable 56.6 per cent were female, compared to 46.4 per cent male.
He noted that the figure significantly surpassed the national trend and underscores UG’s commitment to inclusivity and equal access to education.
He emphasised the university’s pride in the achievement, saying it was a testament to the ongoing efforts to empower women through education.

The Provost said the increased female enrolment was a result of several targeted initiatives, including an affirmative action policy for women and concessions for applicants from less-endowed schools.
He noted that the programmes aimed at erasing barriers to higher education.
The Provost stated that although the University was pleased with the development,” it recognises that there is much work to be done.”
He said the University acknowledged the challenges posed by limited resources and infrastructure, particularly accommodation.
He said the authorities were actively working with government and private sector partners to expand access to education.
The University received a 68,047 undergraduate applications for the 2024-2025 academic year,l but admitted 29,758 students.
The University received applications from 14 countries in Africa, America, Asia, and Europe.
