Dambai (O/R,) Jan 17, GNA – A renewed conflict in Nkwanta South has claimed three lives with seven others sustaining gunshot wounds with many fleeing the conflict zone to safety.
Some seven houses have been burnt with situation sending shockwaves through the community.
Eyewitnesses described the chaotic scene to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), likening it to a war zone, narrating that “All you could hear were gunshots everywhere, bullets and screams filling the air.”
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Lawrence Wiafe, Crime Officer of the Nkwanta South Municipality, who confirmed the disturbing violent attacks, said calm had been restored with beefing up of security in the enclave.
The conflict, which is believed to be ethnically motivated, among three groups, namely, Adeles, Akyodes and Challas ignited in 2021, when misunderstanding struck as to who has the right to organize the annual festival and at what part of Nkwanta, has put rival groups against each other resulting in widespread destruction and loss of lives.
Residents of the township have been forced to flee for their lives, seeking shelter in nearby safe zones and the community is in a state of panic, with many calling for increased security measures to prevent further violence.
The community has been under curfew since the first violent clashes until date.
