Accra, Dec. 10, GNA – Mr. Leonardo Santos Simão, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative, has congratulated Ghanaians for holding a “peaceful and orderly” Presidential and Parliamentary election.
In a statement shared with the Ghana News Agency, he described the successful election as an important step toward strengthening the country’s democracy.
“The sense of responsibility demonstrated by all stakeholders, and the commitment of all the candidates, and leaders of political parties to ensuring that peace and security prevail during the entire electoral process, is once more a significant step towards consolidating the country’s democratic achievements, which will be cited as a model of political maturity and pragmatism,” he stated.
Mr. Santos Simão, who is also the Head of the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), commended Dr Mahamudu Bawumia for his “exemplary and gracious concession.”
He called on Ghanaians to unite behind the President-elect, John Dramani Mahama, as “Ghana continues to serve as an inspiration for the rising tide of democracy throughout the African continent.”
The Special Representative said the United Nations and its regional partners would continue to support the people of Ghana towards “consolidating democracy and prosperity.”
Mr. John Dramani Mahama, flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) was, on Monday, December 9, declared President-elect in the 2024 Presidential election.
He polled 6,328,397 representing 56.55 per cent of total valid votes cast while Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), secured 4,657,304 representing 41.61 per cent of total valid votes.
Mrs. Jean Mensah, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), in her final declaration, stated that the Commission had collated results from 267 constituencies, with nine constituencies still outstanding.
She emphasized that the results from the remaining constituencies would not impact the overall Presidential outcome.
Earlier on Sunday morning, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia conceded defeat to Mr. John Dramani Mahama and expressed gratitude to his supporters for the confidence they had placed in him.
