Tamale, May 09, GNA – Sheikh Ahmed Abdul-Salam, Northern Regional Chief Imam has appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to fulfill his campaign promise of ensuring sustainable water supply across the country, especially in the greater Tamale area.
He said delivering on the promise would help cushion livelihoods and contribute to sustainable development.
Sheikh Abdul-Salam made the call when Mr Gilbert Adjei, Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources, led a delegation to pay a courtesy call on him at the Tamale Central Mosque on Thursday.
He said honouring the commitment would also strengthen public trust in the government especially amongst women and youth, who are most affected by the water crisis.
The visit formed part of ongoing stakeholder engagements with traditional and religious leaders in Tamale and Yendi in the Northern Region aimed at finding both temporary and permanent solutions to the water crisis.

The Minister and his team had earlier paid courtesy calls on Ya-Na Abukari II, Overlord of the Dagbon Traditional Area, the Paramount Chief of the Gulkpegu Traditional Area, and the Lamashiegu Chief.
They also visited the Ambariya Islamic Institute in Tamale as well as interacted with Assembly Members of the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly to update them on government’s efforts to resolve the water challenges in the area.
Mr Adjei reiterated President Mahama’s commitment to fulfilling his promise of resolving the water crisis in Tamale and Yendi before the end of his tenure.
He explained that as part of that commitment, the government was currently providing technical support to temporarily alleviate the situation while working on long-term solutions.
He called on traditional and religious leaders and members of the public to continue trusting the President’s leadership in addressing the crisis decisively.
Sheikh Abubakar Issahaq Tanko, Deputy Head, Islamic Institute in Tamale, commended the government for taking steps to resolve the water issues and urged officials not to disappoint the communities.
