Accra, Dec.06, GNA— The Centre for Africa Development and Progress (CADeP) has called on Ghanaians to reject politicians who engage in vote-buying and coercion ahead of the 2024 general elections.
In a statement issued and signed by Mr. Johanes Koku Nyagblordzro, Executive Chairman of CADeP, the organization noted that such practices not only undermined democracy but also exposed a lack of genuine commitment to public service.
The statement warned of the dangers of electing leaders motivated primarily by personal gain rather than national progress.
It urged voters to prioritize candidates who demonstrate integrity, humility, and a proven track record of service to the people.
“True leadership stems from a willingness to serve, not from a struggle for power. Any individual who resorts to bribery, coercion, or manipulation is unfit to lead. A true leader does not buy votes; they earn trust through consistent demonstration of leadership skills and integrity,” the statement said.
Mr. Nyagblordzro expressed deep concern over the growing use of gifts and cash to influence voters, warning that such tactics compromised the credibility of Ghana’s democratic process.
He also condemned reports of security personnel accepting bribes during special voting, stressing that this undermined their impartiality and the overall integrity of the election.
“Vote-buying erodes the very foundation of democracy. When leaders purchase votes, they prioritize their personal interests over the welfare of the people. This must not be allowed to continue,” he said.
The statement urged voters to critically assess the character and track record of candidates before making their choices.
It reminded Ghanaians of the profound words of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah: “For this end Africa needs a new type of citizen, a dedicated, modest, honest, and informed man. A man who submerges self in service to the nation and mankind. A man who abhors greed and detests vanity. A new type of man whose humility is his strength and whose integrity is his greatness.”
Mr. Nyagblordzro encouraged voters to embrace these ideals by choosing leaders who demonstrated humility, integrity, and selflessness.
He emphasized that breaking the cycle of vote-buying was crucial for fostering true leadership and ensuring democratic stability in Ghana.
Mr. Nyagblordzro urged Ghanaians to rise above partisan politics and prioritize the nation’s welfare when casting their votes.
“CADeP calls on all citizens to exercise their right to vote wisely, ensuring that the leaders chosen truly represent the values and aspirations of a democratic Ghana.
“Let us prioritise integrity, humility, and selflessness as we shape the future of our beloved nation,” he said.
