Accra, Feb 24, GNA – The German Ambassador to Ghana, Daniel Krull, has opened a Migration Information Centre for Returnees (MICR) to help in dealing with the arrival of returnees at the Airport.
The Government-to-Government project is in response to a concrete need identified by the Ghanaian administration for strengthening the national administration capacities to solve the issue of arrival of returnees at the Kotoka Airport.
It is through a partnership between Germany, led by the European Return and Reintegration Network (ERRIN) and the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS).
The initiative received cooperation from the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD) and Frontex, a European Border and Coast Guard Agency.
In his speech at the inauguration of the Centre on Monday, Ambassador Krull said the opening of the Centre was “an important new element to the support structure for Ghanaians, returning to their homeland.”
He said: “We are currently preparing fora dialogue on how to further improve options for legal migration between our two countries [Ghana and Germany).”
He added that: “Personally, I see an important potential for mutual beneficial migration, in particular of qualified technicians, trainees, students, researchers, business people or artists.”
He encourage all stakeholders to continue to engage and explore ways and initiatives to further improve the management of mutual beneficial legal migration.
The Ambassador called for more cooperation in discouraging people from taking the risk – in many cases fatal – routing through the Sahara and the Mediterranean Sea.
He indicated that it was important to encourage people to invest in education and training and to embark on the educative path through Schools, Training Centres, and Universities.
Ghana and Germany cooperate constructively in many ways in matters relating to migration.
The Ghanaian-German Centre for Jobs, Migration and Reintegration (GGC) is the most visible symbol of this cooperation, located in Accra on the premises of the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations.
Since 2017, GGC has offered training, employment, counselling and psychological support to Ghanaians with the aim of facilitating reintegration.
GGC also supports circular migration and diaspora initiatives in Ghana.
