Volta Region begins 20-year spatial development framework

By Caleb Kuleke

Ho, Oct. 14, GNA- A crucial three-day technical session is underway in Ho, to design a comprehensive 20-year Spatial Development Framework to strategically guide all future development activities across the Volta Region.

The long-term framework will serve as a master strategic blueprint covering the region’s entire socio-economic and infrastructural spectrum.

Mr Benjamin Mensah, the Volta Regional Director for the Land Use and Spatial Planning Authority (LUSPA), explained that because every development activity occupied physical space, a structured framework was vital to managing how these projects were executed.

He noted that under the Land Use and Spatial Planning Act, 2016 (Act 925), all regions equipped with a spatial planning committee were legally mandated to formulate this framework to direct land use and developmental growth.

Mr Mensah, speaking to the Ghana News Agency emphasised that accurate data was the backbone of the framework.

He said without accurate data, it would be difficult to produce a comprehensive plan to organise the region’s spatial areas effectively.

The Director thanked the various institutions for supplying the technical committee with critical sector data, which he said, was now being thoroughly analysed to develop a suitable framework for the region.

Mr Mensah called for effective collaboration and support from all institutions, noting that successful development of the framework hinged on continued teamwork.

He also issued a subtle reminder regarding environmental preservation, pointing out that while the Volta Region was celebrated as one of the cleanest in Ghana with excellent air quality, uncoordinated expansion could ruin this status.

Mr Mensah stated that without proper spatial organisation, haphazard activities could quickly take over and derail regional progress.

Once finalised, he said, the spatial framework would harmonise regional growth, ensuring all cross-cutting developmental issues were integrated to enhance the overall socio-economic strength of the Volta Region.
