Kumasi, Oct. 2, GNA – Traditional leaders and Assembly Members have been urged to actively participate in the ongoing constitutional review process to help strengthen constitutional governance and safeguard Ghana’s democratic gains.

Madam Victoria Asumin, a member of the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Committee of Amnesty International, who made the call, said the constitutional reform process had entered a critical implementation phase following the submission of the Review Committee’s report.

She said it was, therefore, important to gather and incorporate the views of individuals and stakeholders to strengthen constitutional governance for national development.

Madam Asumin made the call at a day’s sensitisation workshop organised by the Citizen Platform for Constitutional Review (CPCR) for selected Assembly Members and traditional leaders in Kumasi.

The CPCR is a civic coalition established to coordinate public participation and promote accountability in the review process of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution.

Madam Asumin stressed the importance of clear timelines and well-defined institutional responsibilities to ensure that the recommendations were effectively implemented.

The platform, supported by CDD-Ghana, STAR-Ghana Foundation and Democracy Hub, together with selected local governance networks, is advocating the passage of a Constitutional Reform and Implementation Roadmap Act.

The proposed legislation is expected to outline the reforms to be undertaken, identify the institutions responsible for each stage and specify timelines for completing the various processes.

The constitutional reforms reportedly involve more than 50 amendments and over 14 bills, including new legislation and amendments to existing laws.

The engagement was facilitated by Madam Gifty Nti Konadu, a CDD-Ghana/CPCR representative, Mr Christopher Dapaah of the Local Government Network, and members of the CPCR Regional Coordinating Team.

Some participants, who spoke to the Ghana News Agency expressed appreciation to the organisers and called for the sensitisation exercise to continue through to the final implementation stage of the constitutional review process.
