‎EOCO holds Manhyia South MP as investigations continue

By Elsie Appiah-Osei

‎Accra, Oct. 2, GNA – Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, remains in detention at the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) as the anti-graft agency investigates alleged financial transactions involving SIC Life Savings and Loans. ‎

‎Nana Baffour Awuah, who is also Senior Partner of Sarkodie, Baffour Awuah and Partners, voluntarily surrendered himself to EOCO at about 1000 hours on Thursday, following an Accra High Court warrant authorising his arrest and the search of his office. ‎

‎A Ghana News Agency source confirmed that the MP remained in EOCO custody as investigators continued with the process. ‎

‎The investigations concern allegations of criminal conspiracy, financial loss to SIC Savings and Loans, money laundering, tax-related offences and other matters, according to EOCO. ‎

‎In a news release dated October 1, 2026, and signed by its Head of Corporate Affairs and Public Education, EOCO said Nana Baffour Awuah’s appearance followed several months of efforts by the Office to secure his attendance in connection with the investigations. ‎

‎The Office said it had commenced the applicable investigative and operational procedures and that Nana Baffour Awuah was cooperating with investigators. ‎

‎EOCO said the investigations would be conducted professionally, independently and in accordance with due process, adding that it would pursue all relevant lines of inquiry, examine available evidence and afford all persons involved their rights under the Constitution and applicable laws. ‎

‎It urged the public to allow the investigative and judicial processes to proceed without speculation or premature conclusions regarding the culpability of any individual. ‎

‎EOCO also urged the public to disregard reports circulating on social media alleging that Nana Baffour Awuah had been granted GH¢50 million bail with three sureties. ‎

‎His lawyer, Mr Samuel Atta Akyea, indicated that questioning was expected to continue on Friday, October 2. ‎

‎Meanwhile, a number of legal practitioners and MPs gathered at the EOCO premises on Friday to show solidarity with Nana Baffour Awuah. ‎

‎Mr Frank Annoh-Dompreh, Minority Chief Whip and NPP MP for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, raised concerns about the overnight detention after visiting the EOCO premises to check on his colleague. ‎

‎”The Minority Caucus was surprised by the decision to detain the MP overnight, noting that the matter is still under investigation and yet to be determined.” ‎

‎Mr Annoh-Dompreh dismissed reports suggesting that incriminating evidence had been found at the MP’s office, describing those claims as inaccurate. ‎

‎He said the Caucus would continue to follow due process while monitoring the use of state investigative institutions.
