Sunyani, (Bono), Oct. 31, GNA – The Sunyani Central Prison has inaugurated a vulcanising and car washing centre to provide employable skills training for inmates and to facilitate their rehabilitation and reformation.

With the facility in place, the inmates would learn car washing, vehicle detailing and vulcanizing and to facilitate their successful re-integration in society after serving their sentences, besides improving the revenue generation of the central prisons.

The center, situated along the main Sunyani-Fiapre highway, and close to the Bono Regional Coordinating Council, would provide vehicle body and undercarriage washing and engine cleaning services.

It would also provide interior detailing, upholstery and carpet shampooing, leather seat conditioning and engine steam cleaning as well as tyre puncture repairs, fitting, replacement, pressure checks and valve replacement.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony in Sunyani, the Director of Prisons (DoP) Thompson Otsyokpo, the Bono, Bono East and Ahafo Regional Commander and the Officer in-charge of the Sunyani Central Prisons, said the initiative formed part of efforts to enhance the reformation of the inmates as well as improving the welfare personnel.

He urged the public to support the reformation of the inmates, saying that they were also members of society.

DoP Otsyokpo noted that the government alone could not shoulder the responsibility of rehabilitating inmates and called for support from individuals and organisations.

Superintendent of Prisons Dennis Peasah, the Bono Regional Public Relations Officer of the Prison Service noted that providing inmates with practical skills, guidance and support would greatly aid their reformation.

He said the project aligned with the Prisons Service’s ‘Think Prisons 360 Degrees’ initiative, explaining that the initiative focused not only on ensuring the safe custody of inmates, but also facilitating their reformation, empowerment and rehabilitation.

Supt Peasah expressed the hope that the centre would promote learning, discipline and productivity and thereby enabling the inmates to acquire employable skills.

Mr Eric Kumi, Chief Executive Officer of Erikama Enterprise, sponsors of the project urged the public to support improved prison facilities and to strengthen efforts towards the reformation of the inmates.
